Berger vice president of thedevices developer Abiomed of Danvers Massachusetts. Their hearts must be sodiseased with both ventricles impaired that they are projected to live no more than30 days. And they cannot be eligible for a heart transplant.

In 1982 a patient namedBarney Clark who was suffering from a failing heart swapped his own heart for adevice called the Jarvik-7. plagued by medical problems Clark died after 112 days.In subsequent years the Jarvik-7 helped keep more than 70 people alive while theywaited for a transplant. But since patients were tied to external compressed-air hosesto power the heart the Jarvik-7 was never widely used as anything more than ashort-term replacement.

Sitting in the chest cavity the 2-pund device consists of amotor-driven system that opens and closes two artificial ventricles. A miniaturizedelectronics package placed in the abdomen monitors and controls the heartspumping speed based on the patients needs. an internal rechargeable battery and anexternal rechargeable battery pack power the system.
