12.rather，fairly

兩者在表示相當地、多多少少地、有一點的意思時，用法上有所不同。Rather常用來修飾一些表示不愉快的形容詞，fairly常用來修飾好的、愉快的場合。試比較：

　　（1）This is a fairly easy book.

　　（2）his is a rather easy book.

　　句（1）意為這本書相當淺易。（但比較合適）。句（2）意為這本書太淺易（由于太淺易所以不合適）。再者，rather可以與比較級、too、名詞和動詞連用，而fairly不可以，如：This hat is rather more expensive than that.這頂帽子比那一頂貴得多。This book is rather difficult for the juniors and rather too easyfor the seniors.這本書對低年級學生太難，對高年級學生又太容易。We were all rather exhausted when we got to the top of the mountain.我們到達山頂時都相當疲憊了。上述句子中的rather都不為fairly所代替。

兩者均作副詞時，意思均為有些、有幾分，但some一般用于肯定句中；any用在疑問句或否定句中：Is he any better today?Yes,he is some better.他今天好一些了嗎？是的，稍微好點了。We couldnt bear the sound any longer.我們再也受不了這聲音啦。Did you sleep any last night？你昨天夜里睡了點覺嗎？
