These are some ideas that some people came up with about what the life will be like in the year 2500:
We will have established a base on the moon.School kids can take field trips to the moon weekly. We will have found cures(療法)for AIDS and cancer. The war will have ended and peace flows freely through the land.Kids will learn more and be smarter than ever before! History will be the main subject at school.Cafeteria(自助餐廳)food will be delicious! You just walk up to a machine, stick out your tongue, and it will scan your taste buds(味蕾)to see what you want to eat.
—Kristen
Here I am in the wonderful year of 2500 and life is so easy.I work in a pet store and it is so hard! I have to wake up at midnight every day and fly my ear to the store. It takes so long to get there. It takes me 20 seconds to get to the store in Mississippi from my home in Florida! At work,I have to push 5 buttons and then I go home.It takes 2 seconds and that is like forever.
—Morgan
In the year 2500,I think we will have invented cars that run on things we don't need like garbage.Tail gas will smell like whatever you like such as chocolate.I also predict that buildings will be able to go into a different dimension(維)so your car won't hit them. The cars in 2500 don't fly,for we haven't got that technology yet,but they can hover(盤旋)up to seven feet. These cars are made for speed!
——Carly
Instead of cars,we may have hovering devices that float around. We could also have electric cars instead of gas powered cars.Food might be more healthy. What I believe is that
the
environment
will
change
the
most. The environmental changes will
also determine many other changes. If more people try to help the environment, then perhaps in 2500 we will have more forests and wildlife. If people won't help the environment, then we will have no forests and little wildlife left—Roberta

An American poet Robert Frost ever said,“Poetry is what gets lost in translation.”In this sense, something in Tang poetry will get lost after being translated into English. Here comes the untranslatability(不可翻譯)of Tang poems in English translation.Tang poetry is the harmonious unity of beautiful sound,well-balanced form and implicit sense so that it is very difficult to translate them into other languages satisfactorily.English is intonation(語調)language while Chinese is tone language so that they are dissimilar in sound;English spelling words are alphabetic writing while Chinese square characters are ideographic(表意文字)so that they are dissimilar in form;English was born and develops in western cultural background while Chinese in oriental so that they are dissimilar in sense.Based on the differences above,a conclusion is made naturally in the article that in the process of translating Tang poems into English, there is some untranslatability, namely, sound untranslatability, form untranslatability and sense untranslatability. In fact, the study on the untranslatability of Tang poetry still has a great room for development,as it remains an unsolved problem. In this case, however, talking about the untranslatability of Tang poems in English translation is not against the translation work of Tang poems but for the better translations of them.

When he thought of the past,my grandfather would sometimes show us photographs of himself at school. They were brown and faded, and it was hard to believe that the blurred figure of the little boy in the short trousers and socks could ever have been Grandfather.Besides,he wore a cap—and the boys in the photographs wore caps pulled so far forward that half of their faces were obscured. When Grandfather asked us to pick him out from the group,we would surely point to the wrong boy.
On one such occasion my younger sister, aged six, burst into tears when Grandfather proudly guided her finger to the right boy.“How could that boy be you?”she cried.“He should have a heard.”We were,of course, all convinced that grandfathers should have
beards,preferably
white
and
bushy,like
our
own grandfather's.
“I was a good scholar,”Grandfather would say, wagging his beard over the photographs.“I should have been top of the class if I hadn't had to get up at six every morning to milk the cows and chop the wood, and again when I came home from school.”
“But Saturdays? What did you do on Saturdays?”
“Saturdays,if it was fine,I'd be out all day in the fields with the men,”replied Grandfather. “And if it was wet,I'd be helping my mother with odd jobs round the house. There wasn't much time for studying.”
We all tried hard to imagine what it would have been like to have been Grandfather getting up at crack of dawn and never, obviously, having a moment for himself. It seemed we had learnt something from what Grandfather had said about his childhood.
1.In the first paragraph of this passage, what the author really tells us is that________.
A. his grandfather used to wear short trousers, socks and a cap as well
B.it was difficult to tell which of the boys in the photographs was Grandfather
C.he didn't believe Grandfather wore a cap pulled forward when he was at school
D.it was fun to watch boys in the photographs wearing caps pulled forward
When Grandfather asked us to pick him out from the group,we would surely point to the wrong boy.
2.The author's sister burst into tears because________.
A. she did not get a chance to pick out Grandfather in the photographs
B.she was told which was the right boy before she herself could pick him out
C.other children did not agree with her that Grandfather should have had a beard
D.she found Grandfather in the photographs did not have a beard答案:D 細節判斷題,可用直接就題找題法來解。由短文第二段第二句:“How could that boy be you?”she cried.“He should have a beard.”
3.When Grandfather said,“I should have been top of the class...”,be meant________.
A. if he had had more time for studying,he would have been the best in his class
B.he should have spent more time studying rather than playing ball games
C.his school days should not have been so hard and miserable
D.he could have never been the best student even if he had studied still harder
4.In the last paragraph the author said,“We all tried hard to imagine...”because________.
A. the figures of the boys in the photographs were small and blurred
B.the children had never experienced life like that of Grandfather
C.the photographs Grandfather showed them were brown and faded
D.Grandfather failed to tell them about his childhood in detail

Why should mankind explore space? Why should money, time and effort be spent exploring and researching something with so few apparent benefits? Why should resources be spent on space rather than on conditions and people on Earth? These are questions that, understandably, are very often asked.
Perhaps the best answer lies in our genetic makeup(基因構成) as human beings. What drove our ancestors to move from the trees into the plains, and on into all possible areas and environments? The wider the spread of a species, the better its chance of survival. Perhaps the best reason for exploring space is this genetic tendency to expand wherever possible.
Nearly every successful civilization has explored, because by doing so, any dangers in surrounding areas can be identified and prepared for. Without knowledge, we may be completely destroyed by the danger. With knowledge, we can lessen its effects.
Exploration also allows minerals and other potential(潛在的) resources to be found.Even if we have no immediate need of them, they will perhaps be useful later. Resources may be more than physical possessions. Knowledge or techniques have been acquired through exploration. The techniques may have medical applications which can improve the length or quality of our lives. We have already benefited from other spin-offs including improvements in earthquake prediction, in satellites for weather forecasting and in communications systems. Even nonstick pans and mirrored sunglasses are byproducts(副產品) of technological developments in the space industry!
While many resources are spent on what seems a small return, the exploration of space allows creative, brave and intelligent members of our species to focus on what may serve to save us. While space may hold many wonders and explanations of how the universe was formed or how it works, it also holds dangers. The danger exists, but knowledge can help human beings to survive. Without the ability to reach out across space, the chance to save ourselves might not exist.
While Earth is the only planet known to support life, surely the adaptive ability of humans would allow us to live on other planets. It is true that the lifestyle would be different, but human life and cultures have adapted in the past and surely could in the future.
1.Why does the author mention the questions in Paragraph 1?
A.To express his doubts.
B.To compare different ideas.
C.To introduce points for discussion.
D.To describe the conditions on Earth.
2.What is the reason for exploring space based on Paragraph 2?
A.Humans are nature-born to do so.
B.Humans have the tendency to fight.
C.Humans may find new sources of food.
D.Humans don’t like to stay in the same place.
3.The underlined word “spin-offs” in Paragraph 4 probably refers to ________.
A.survival chances
B.potential resources
C.unexpected benefits
D.physical
possessions
4.What makes it possible for humans to live on other planets?A.Our genetic makeup.
B.Resources on the earth.
C.The adaptive ability of humans.
D.Byproducts in space exploration.
