Ⅱ.閱讀理解
A
High heels, coffee cups and dogs have been regarded as three of the most dangerous things to have in a car.
While men were responsible for the greater number of accidents reported, women played their part by driving in high heels.
Putting fashion over function meant 44 percent of female motorists had been prevented from using the pedals correctly by their high heels.
Being keen on a caffeine kick while driving can also create an accident if they leave empty coffee cups lying around their vehicles. Twenty percent of those surveyed admitted they had crashed their cars or had a near miss after a deserted coffee cup or an empty drink bottle rolled under their brake pedals.
However, it is not just wearing and eating that cause a threat from inside the car; man's best friend could also cause a catastrophe if not safely secured.
One in eight motorists claimed to have had a scrape(擦傷) or miss on the road due to their dogs' wandering freely, climbing into the front seat or trying to escape through the windows.
The accidents meant drivers took their eyes off the road for more than three seconds each time, according to the poll of 2,000 British motorists.
The survey has found drivers will pick up an average bill of £261.47 for the damage caused by every crash. Londoners were the most at risk of an accident closely followed by motorists in the West Midlands and Wales.
Janet Connor, a managing director, said many accidents could be avoided if people cleaned their cars regularly, as one in ten drivers involved in crashes admitted to driving inside a mountain of waste materials. She said, “The possible dangers and distractions outside the car are well-known but as the evidence suggests, those within the car are often forgotten.”
1.What mistake do women drivers most probably make while driving?
A. They wear expensive clothes.
B. They wear shoes with high heels.
C. They drink too much coffee in cars.
D. They take their dogs without tying them.
2.Those who like drinking coffee often have accidents because ________.
A. the coffee may make them feel faint
B. the coffee may make the car smell terrible
C. empty coffee cups may make the brake fail
D. deserted bottles look the same as brake pedals
3.Why shouldn't drivers put their dogs in the car while driving?
A. Dogs may bark loudly if seeing traffic lights.
B. Dogs may walk around or even try to escape.
C. Dogs may break the windows to get fresh air.
D. Dogs may make the inside of the car dirty.
4.We can mainly learn from the passage that ________.
A. people often neglect the dangers outside the car
B. accidents will be avoided if cars are cleaned regularly
C. dangers within the car should be given more attention to
D. only 10% of the drivers remember to keep their cars clean

Insects trapped in fossilized amber (琥珀)
for tens of millions of years have provided the key to creating a new generation of antibiotic drugs that could start a war against modern diseases. Scientists have isolated the antibiotics from microbes(微生物) found either from these insects or in soil particles trapped with them when they were caught by sticky tree risen up to 130 million years ago.
Present-day
antibiotics
have
nearly
all
been isolated from microbes that use them as a form of defense against their enemies and competitors.
But since the introduction of antibiotics into medicine 50 years
ago,
an
alarming
number
have
become ineffective because
many
bacteria have
developed resistance to the drugs.
Research over the past two years has uncovered at least four antibiotics from the microbes and one has been able to kill modern drug-resistant bacteria that can cause potentially deadly diseases in humans.
Raul Cano, who has pioneered the research at the California
Polytechnic
State
University, said the ancient antibiotics had been successful in fighting drug-resistant strains of staphylococcus (葡萄球菌),a “superbug” that had threatened the health of patients in hospitals across the globe. He now intends to establish whether the antibiotics might have side effects.
“The problem is how toxic they are to other cells and how easy they are to purify”, said Cano.
Cano's findings have been acknowledged as a breakthrough. A biotechnology company, Ambergene, has been set up to develop the antibiotics into drugs. If any ancient microbes are revived (復(fù)活)
that resemble present-day disease, they will be destroyed in case they escape and cause new epidemics. Drug companies will be anxious to study the chemical structures of the prehistoric antibiotics to see how they differ from modern drugs. They hope that one ancient molecule could be used as a basis to produce a range of drugs.
However, even the use of ancient antibiotics may not stop the rise of drug-resistant bacteria. Stuart Levy warned that the bacteria would eventually evolve to fight back against the new drugs. “There might also be an enzyme already out there that can degrade it. So the only way to keep the life of that antibiotic going is to use it sensibly and not excessively,” he said.
5. What problem has man faced since the use of
antibiotics as medicine according to the passage?
A. Antibiotics are very difficult to purify.
B. Antibiotics do harm to human health.
C. Antibiotics resemble some disease-causing bacteria.
D. Antibiotics are becoming ineffective in fighting against bacteria.
6. Why are Cano's findings considered as a breakthrough in science?
A. His discoveries will help revive ancient microbes.
B. His discoveries will put an end to the rise of drug-resistant bacteria.
C. The
company
Ambergene
has
applied
the prehistoric antibiotics to drugs.
D. The prehistoric antibiotics proved more deadly against drug-resistant modern bacteria.
7. According to the last paragraph, what is Stuart Levy's
attitude
towards
the
use
of
ancient antibiotics ?
A. Cautious.
B. Contradictory.
C. Confident.
D. Critical.
8. Which of the following can be the best title for the
passage?
A. Antibiotics-Dangerous or Not?
