為了避免重復，不定式可只用一個to來代表。這種用法主要用于下列動詞之后： hate， hope， intend， would like/love，make(被動語態)，mean， plan， try， want;也用于助動詞如have， need， ought之后時以及與 used to， be able to和 be go-ing to結構連用時：

　　Yes， Id love to.

　　是的，我愿意。

　　Did you get a ticket?

　　No， I tried to， but there werent any left.你有票了嗎?

　　沒有，我盡力找了，可一張也沒有了。

　　Why did you take a taxi?

　　I had to(take one).I was late.

　　你為什么坐出租汽車?

　　我不得不坐。(因為)我晚了。

　　Do you ride?

　　Not now but I used to.

　　你騎馬嗎?

　　我現在不騎了，但以前騎。

　　He wanted to go but he wasnt able to.

　　他想去，但去不了。

　　Have you fed the dog?

　　No， but Im just going to.

　　你喂過狗了嗎?

　　沒有，我這就要去呢。
