“Sooner or later, we will have to recognize that the Earth also has rights to live without pollution. What we must know is that human beings cannot live without the Earth, but the planet can live without humans.”—Evo Morales

I am not one to tell people what to do; I basically believe that as Americans we have a right to our own opinions, social issues, etc. Now, with that being said, I must stress one issue that seems to be a growing trend:pick up your trash.

I love the fact that parents involve their children in outdoor activities. In fact, I encourage outdoor activities for children. I think that being outdoors away from technological devices fuels the imagination. That is to say, it provides materials for children's writing and creation. I really do love seeing a family sitting along a river bridge and enjoying some summertime fishing as well as exploring. But what I do not like is going back to the same area the next day and finding the place littered with trash. Pick up your trash.

If you are teaching your children about outdoor activities, such as fishing, teach them to respect nature as well. When packing your supplies for the day's outing, throw a small kitchen bag in with the rest of the items. Use the kitchen bag to throw your papers, cans, wrappers, containers and everything else that is not at the site upon arrival. Remember to take the kitchen bag with you. Don't misuse your responsibility and model.

I am the first one to admit that I am not perfect when it comes to the “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”program. From my desk right now, I can see a pile of old magazines that need to be taken to the recycling center. But I would never leave trash along a roadside or other public areas.

I would like to see future generations enjoy the outdoors without all the pollutants left behind today. For now, I would just like to take my wildlife photos without litter in the background. Pick up your trash.

1.What is implied in Evo Morales' words in Paragraph 1?

  A. Human beings should change their attitude towards the Earth.

  B. Human beings will live forever on the Earth safe and sound.

  C. Human beings have realized the importance of caring about the Earth.

  D. Human beings only know they have rights to ask for more from the Earth.

2.Why does the author think he is not perfect when referring to the Three R's program?

  A. He isn't accustomed to using the kitchen bag.

  B. He would never pick up trash at the roadside.

  C. He always throws the old magazines to the dustbin.

  D. He doesn't take his old magazines to a recycling center.

3.What is the purpose of this passage?

  A. To give parents some guidance on how to educate their children.

  B. To teach a lesson to those parents who don't care about the Earth.

  C. To show his attitude towards parents' behavior in outdoor activities.

  D. To ask parents to guide their kids to respect nature in outdoor activities.

從倒數(shù)第二段中的“From my desk right now, I can see a pile of old magazines that need to be taken to the recycling center.”

從文章多處出現(xiàn)的“Pick up your trash”,第三段中的“I love the fact that parents involve their children in outdoor activities.”以及第四段中的“If you are teaching your children... teach them to respect nature as well.”

Given that many people's moods (情緒) are regulated by the chemical action of chocolate, it was probably only a matter of time before somebody made the chocolate shop similar to a drugstore of Chinese medicine.

Looking like a setting from the film Charlie

& the Chocolate Factory, Singapore's Chocolate Research Facility (CRF) has over 100 varieties of chocolates. Its founder is Chris Lee who grew up at his parents' corner store with one hand almost always in the jar of sweets.

If the CRF seems to be a smart idea, that's because Lee is not merely a seasoned salesperson but also head of a marketing department that has business relations with big names such as Levi's and Sony. That idea surely results in the imagination at work when it comes to making different flavored (味道) chocolates.

  The CRF's produce is “green”,

made within the country and divided into 10 lines, with the Alcohol Series being the most popular. The Exotic Series-with Sichuan pepper, red bean (豆), cheese and other flavors-also does well and is fun to taste. And for chocolate_snobs,_who think that they have a better knowledge of chocolate than others, the Connoisseur Series uses cocoa beans from Togo, Cuba, Venezuela, and Ghana, among others.

  4.What is good about chocolate?

  A. It serves as a suitable gift.

  B. It works as an effective medicine.

  C. It helps improve the state of mind.

  D. It strengthens business relations.

5.Why is Chris Lee able to develop his idea of the CRF?

  A. He knows the importance of research.

  B. He learns from shops of similar types.

  C. He has the support of many big names.

  D. He has a lot of marketing experience.

6.Which line of the CRF produce sells best?

  A. The Connoisseur Series.

  B. The Exotic Series.

  C. The Alcohol Series.

  D. The Sichuan Series.

7.The underlined words “chocolate snobs” in Paragraph 3 probably refer to people who ________.

  A. are particular about chocolate

  B. know little about cocoa beans

  C. look down upon others

  D. like to try new flavors

由第一段第一句中的“Given that many people's moods (情緒)are regulated by the chemical action of chocolate...”

由第二段中的“that's because Lee is not merely a seasoned salesperson but also head of a marketing department...”

由最后一段第一句“The CRF's produce is ‘green’, made within the country and divided into 10 lines, with the Alcohol Series being the most popular.”

7.A。 根據(jù)畫線部分后的定語從句“who think that they have a better knowledge of chocolate than others”可知,chocolate snobs是指那些對巧克力非常熟悉的人,故可推斷出他們也是對巧克力比較挑剔的人。A項中的be particular about意為“對……挑剔”。

Every Tuesday, my daughters have two hours of softball practice. This is when I head around the corner to the library and work on my weekly class newsletter, grade papers and visit HelpOthers.

I also do acts of kindness. I have put homemade smile cards in library books and also left money with a note at the reference desk to pay someone's late fines (罰款).

Tonight, I attached (貼上) a homemade smile card to a small bag of chocolate. As I walked into the library, I headed to my usual area near the reference desk and placed the bag on a table. I sat in a chair near the table and did some work.

It was so interesting how quickly the library workers noticed! I heard some say “Hey, did you see that?”as they pointed to the chocolate. The reference worker who I had given the money to pay fines was there tonight working. She noticed me and the familiar blue homemade RAK card and was whispering to explain what I had done previously.

For forty-five minutes, I would type and look up. It was interesting to watch as people slowed to read the card, but kept going. I think many felt uncomfortable taking it because it was out in the open. I figured it might take some time, and then I dove into (潛心) grading papers.

At the end of an hour and half, I packed up to get the girls. As I looked up, I noticed the chocolate was gone! How did I possibly miss someone taking it?

Then I was left wondering —man or woman, young or old, I'll never know. But I do hope they enjoyed it, and I'm so glad they took it.

As I usually do, I visited briefly with the softball moms at the end of the practice. I shared the exciting news about my kindness article and told them about the library acts of kindness.

1.Every Tuesday, the author goes to the library ________.

  A. to hand out the homemade cards

  B. to chat with the library workers

  C. to work as a volunteer

  D. to wait for her daughters

2.Why did the author leave money with a note at the reference desk?

  A. To buy smile cards.

  B. To do an act of kindness.

  C. To pay for her late fines.

  D. To thank the library workers.

3.After placing the bag of chocolate on a table, the author ________.

  A. sat down to have a rest and relax herself

  B. began to do her own work attentively

  C. kept an eye on what would happen to it

  D. started to hear what the library workers were talking about

  4.The author is most probably a ________.

  A. librarianB. teacher

  C. tennis coach

  D. social worker

根據(jù)第一段中的“Every Tuesday, my daughters have two hours of softball practice. This is when I head around the corner to the library...”

根據(jù)第二段中的“also left money with a note at the reference desk to pay someone's late fines(罰款)”可知,作者旨在幫助某個在圖書館因逾期還書而被罰款的人,A、C和D均不合適。

根據(jù)第一段第二句中的“work on my weekly class newsletter, grade papers”可知,作者應該是一名教師。故選B。

  Does Fame Drive You Crazy?

Although being famous might sound like a dream come true, today's stars, feeling like zoo animals, face pressures that few of us can imagine. They are at the center of much of the world's attention. Paparazzi(狗仔隊) camp outside their homes, cameras ready. Tabloids (小報) publish

thrilling stories about their personal lives. Just imagine not being able to do anything without being photographed or interrupted for a signature!

According to psychologist Christina Villarreal, celebrities—famous people-worry constantly about their public appearance. Eventually, they start to lose track of who they really are, seeing themselves the way their fans imagine them, not as the people they were

before everyone knew their names. “Over time,” Villarreal says,

  “they feel separated and alone.”

The phenomenon of tracking celebrities has been around for ages. In the 4th century B. C.,

painters followed Alexander the Great into battle, hoping to picture his victories for his admirers. When Charles Dickens visited America in the 19th century, his sold-out readings

  attracted

  thousands

  of fans,

  leading

  him

  to

complain (抱怨) about his lack of privacy. Tabloids of the 1920s and 1930s ran articles about film-stars in much the same way that modern tabloids and websites do.

Being a public figure today, however,is a lot more difficult than

it used to be. Superstars cannot move about without worrying about photographers with modern cameras. When they say something silly

or do something ridiculous, there is always the Internet to spread the

news in minutes and keep their “story” alive forever.

  If fame is so troublesome,

why aren't all celebrities running away from it? The answer is there are still ways to deal with it. Some stars stay calm by surrounding themselves with trusted friends and family or by escaping to remote places away from big cities. They focus not on how famous they are but on what they love to do or whatever made them famous in the first place.

Sometimes a few celebrities can get a little justice. Still, even stars who enjoy full justice often complain about how hard their lives are. They are tired of being famous already.

  5. It can be learned from the passage that stars today ________.

  A. are often misunderstood by the public

  B. can no longer have their privacy protected

  C. spend too much on their public appearance

  D. care little about how they have come into fame

  6. What is the main idea of Paragraph 3?

  A. Great heroes of the past were generally admired.

  B. The problem faced by celebrities has a long history.

  C. Well-known actors are usually targets of tabloids.

  D. Works of popular writers often have a lot of readers.

  7. What makes it much harder to be a celebrity today?

  A. Availability of modern media.

  B. Inadequate social recognition.

  C. Lack of favorable chances.

  D. Huge population of fans.

  8. What is the author's attitude toward modern celebrity?

  A. Sincere.

  B. Sceptical.

  C. Disapproving.

  D. Sympathetic.

[長難句] Although being famous might sound like a dream come true, today's stars, feeling like zoo animals, face pressures that few of us can imagine.

本句是復合句,although引導讓步狀語從句;feeling like zoo animals是現(xiàn)在分詞短語作狀語,主句為today's stars face pressures that few of us can imagine。

5.B。 根據(jù)文章第一段第二、三、四句“They are at the center of much of the world's attention. Paparazzi camp outside their homes, cameras ready. Tabloids publish thrilling stories about their personal lives.”
